Sourcing and retaining talent for your business

We recently attended a local business event and discovered that a lot of smaller businesses were advertising for positions on the traditional job websites and receiving hundreds of applicants.  Whilst this is a great platform to source your next employee, sifting through the CV’s can be a very time consuming process and can distract from your day to day activities that keep your business growing.
Ask yourself, have you actually costed up the time you spend going through CV’s, speaking to potential candidates and organising interviews only to find out that they’re not the right fit or worse still, that they don’t even show up? Finding the right candidate for that all important interview takes time and effort.

After reading this, ask yourself a couple of questions:
Have you done your maths?  Could a Recruitment agency be more cost effective? If so…
What should you look for in a recruitment agency?

The Recruitment agency needs to:
  • Be enthusiastic about your company and show interest in your people by understanding the main roles within a company and its critical success factors.
  • Understand the business and identify the key skills and experience required for each role.
  • Be proactive in sourcing ideal candidates and go out looking for them rather than waiting for applications to come in via traditional websites.
  • Be confident in forwarding only a handful of strong candidates and not rely on speculative CV’s. The recruitment agency should do all the vetting of the candidate to check suitability for the position, thus adding value to the service they offer.
  • Have a good database and relationship with potential candidates, the right candidate may just come up at the wrong time, just think that a database at a recruitment agency may hold the best talent for your job.
The employer needs to:
  • Be willing to discuss the organisation and what it does. Share any recruitment plans so that the recruitment agency can plan ahead for possible recruitment in the future.
  • Be committed to producing accurate role profiles or job descriptions. These are essential to accurate recruitment programmes.
  • Keep channels of communication open and give constructive feedback.
